Exploring The Money Dynamics of The Enneagram

Dear Money Adventurer,

I am a lifelong collector of tools and practices that empower me to know myself more.

I have spent most of my life seeking deeper understanding, longing to uncover the wisdom behind my emotions, beliefs, personal values, and why I am the way I am.

When I was 16, I asked my parents if I could go to therapy because I was fascinated by psychology and longed to understand myself better.

Years later, when I was in graduate school studying Somatic Therapy, I discovered a new tool–the Enneagram personality typing system. While I’ve always been skeptical of typing systems and their tendency towards sweeping generalities, the Enneagram approach resonated with me.

What is Enneagram?

The Enneagram offers nuance that nurtures self-discovery and the perspective to understand the dynamics of our relationships with greater clarity and compassion.

Each of the nine personality types that make up the Enneagram system highlights a unique combination of dominant beliefs, traits, strengths, and challenges that drive the choices we make and how we show up in the world. But it goes deeper than that, illuminating how each personality is expressed when we are rooted in balance (healthy), what it looks like when we’re out of balance (unhealthy), and how we respond to stress and support.

It was a revelation to me, a life-changing tool that has helped me to bring more awareness to my own patterns, gifts, and challenges in the decades since I stumbled across this system. It’s given me insight and understanding to bring to my marriage, my parenting, my relationships, my business, and my work as a Financial Therapist.

Two years ago I was invited to be a guest on the Typology podcast hosted by psychotherapist and Enneagram teacher Ian Morgan Cron.  I let him know that while I am a Financial Therapist and a lover of Enneagram, I’m not an expert on the money dynamics of the Enneagram system.

He wanted me to riff on money dynamics anyway, so this interview is a spontaneous exploration of financial therapy and the 9 personality types of enneagram. So bring your curiosity and tune in here to the interview.

Exploring The Money Dynamics of The Enneagram

I genuinely believe that learning to understand ourselves better is one of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves and the people we love. That is why I recommend Enneagram as an avenue of exploration to all my Art of Money-ers, and it’s why I’m re-sharing this interview with you today.

Now, to be fair, I have to tell you that I am not a fan of the Enneagram tests intended to determine your personal typology. They’ve never worked for me. I highly recommend reading through the type descriptions in Riso-Hudson’s book, “The Wisdom of the Enneagram,” and tuning in to what resonates for you. (You’ll see me holding this book above!)

Resonance offers wisdom if only we are willing to listen.

I hope you find a spark of inspiration here, that you allow it to lead you to greater self-understanding, and to bring ever more loving compassion to your life, your relationships, and your very own money journey.

With my dearest wishes,
